MUMEENA
The Tempus Project Closing Conference “Modernizing Undergraduate Medical Education in EU Eastern Neighbouring Area” – took place on 3rd–4th, 2014 of September at UNIVERSITA CATTOLICA del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy.
The PCIT MUMEENA teams from medical schools of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan with participation of Medical Universities representatives of Italy, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Spain took part in final Conference. Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University as an one of the stakeholders of the Project was presented by Vice-rector Prof.,Hanna Ersteniuk, coordinator of the Project Assoc.Prof., Gennadiy Strutynsky, Assoc. Prof. Olga Burak, Head of the Department of ECTS and EQM, Assoc.Prof., Vasyl Kapechuk. The main issues that were discussed at the Conference: the financial support of the final stage of the Project, evaluation andquality of implementation MUMEENAPrograms and further strategies towards further prolongation of Project.
On 8th-9th July 2014 in the Conference Hall of the University Academic Senate (2, Halytska Str., Central Building) was held the seminar “Main Achievements of IFNMU in Implementing MUMEENA Project”
Among the participants and the honorable guest there wereElaine Brock (TEMPUS MUMEENA Finance Manager, Leeds UK),Dr Anne-Marie Reid (TEMPUS MUMEENA co-ordinator, Leeds, UK) and IFNMU teaching staff.
First Pro-Rector Hanna Ersteniuk greeted all the present participants. Pro-Rector for Science and Educational Work (International Relations) S.F. Kobets presented IFNMU as one of the oldest and the most successful universities of Prykarpattia.
Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department of Social Medicine and HCO Oryna Detsyk spoke on the approaches to studying palliative and hospice care in the higher educational establishments.
Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Prof. of the Department of Medicine No.2 Viktoriia Miiziuk, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. of the Department of Internal Diseases Tetiana Dzvonkovska, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Prof. of the Department of General Surgery Markiian Piuryk shared their experience in conducting CBCR classes in IFNMU medical students.
Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Prof. of the Department of Social Medicine and HCO focused on approaches to the research skills development.
Chief of the Educational Centre for Teachers, Doctor of Medical Sciences Prof. Valentyna Dzvonkovska together with the teacher from the Department of Linguistics Viktoriia Vysochan reported the issues and aspects for the development of IFNMU Educational Centre for Teachers.
At the end of the seminar everybody had the opportunity to visit Educational Centre “Dentistry” (17, Nezalezhnosti Str.)
On the second day of the conference Ms Elaine Brock met with the MUMEENA team at the University to discuss how the MUMEENA budget was being spent and to outline opportunities for future developments. Dr Anne-Marie Reid provided a workshop with staff and students to discuss how to build on the current foundations of Faculty Development and student education through modern learning and teaching methodologies.
A tour of the Educational Centre "Medicine" was conducted by the Dean who demonstrated the excellent practical and bedside teaching in the centre.
The Tempus Project Closing Conference “TEMPUS MUMEENA – Celebrating achievements and looking to the future of Medical Education in Eastern Europe” – took place on 1st July – 3rd July, 2014 at the Tbilisi State Medical University, Tbilisi (Georgia).
The Conference was focused on main achievements during project implementation and further strategies towards further improvement of medical education in Georgia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan partner medical schools. Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University as one of the project partners was represented by the First Pro-Rector Prof. Hanna Ersteniuk, Project Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Gennadiy Strutynsky, Chief of Educational Department Mykola Ivantsiv and Chief of Department of ESTC and Education Monitoring Department Assoc. Prof. Vasyl Kapechuk.
On the 28thApril 2014 washeldtheannualscientific and practicalconference “The Experience in Implementing the Credit-and-Modular System of Organizing Educational Process in Prykarpattia Higher Educational Establishments of the III-IV Accreditation Levels” dedicated to the experience achieved by IFNMU lecturers within the frameworks of the EU TEMPU SMUMEENA project.
Special interest andlively discussion among the conference participants was caused by the speakers’ presentations on the case based clinical reasoning (CBCR) development in students at the departments of Internal Medicine No.2 (Assoc. Prof. V. Miziuk), Propaedeutics (Assoc. Prof. T. Dzvonkovska), General Surgery (Assoc. Prof. I. Dmytriv) and on the research skills development at the department of Social Medicine (Assoc. Prof. O. Samotovka), accompanied by a video demonstration of the conducted classes.
In the conference theses, published under the Tempus program sponsorship, there are presented the results gained by university staff in the following directions: development of the experience in implementing the credit-and-modular system of study, development of case based clinical reasoning (CBCR) and research skills (RSC), realization of the integrated program of training medical faculties’ students in order for them to master practical skills and methods, organization and effectiveness of the educational and practical centers’ activity, and the experience in improving the postgraduate training of specialists.
Modernising Undergraduate Medical Education in the EU Eastern Neighbouring
Since 2011 Ivano-FrankivskNationalMedicalUniversity is involved in international project TEMPUS ″Modernising Undergraduate Medical Education in the EU Eastern Neighbouring Area (MUMEENA″ in the framework of TEMPUS EACEA 32/2010. Project № 516664-TEMPUS-1-2011-1-UK-TEMPUS-JPCR. Address of the site http://www.mumeena.eu/index.html
36-month project involving four European medical schools , six universities and three institutions (National Ministries and Accreditation Agencies) from the three partner countries (10.2011-10.2014). Countries - participants: Great Britain (Leeds), Netherlands (Utrecht), Spain (Granada) and Italy (Milan), Ukraine, Azerbaijan andGeorgia.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of undergraduate medical education in the partner countries , particularly in Ukraine , to ensure its compliance with the principles and objectives of the Bologna Process and international standards to integrate Ukrainian medical education in the single European educational space.
The specific objectives of the project
- Create or update standardshigher medical education
- Modernization of the integrated curriculum for doctors at undergraduate stage in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine by improving existing and introducing new teaching, training and appraisal approaches within individual subjects and modules (samples) (the example of Social Medicine; Geriatrics (Senior people medicine); early mastering of clinical reasoning and clinical skills; formation research skills ) in accordance with international standards AMEE/WFME
- Professional development of teaching staff by creating Teacher Training Centers inevery partner country to ensure sustainable infrastructure of modernization process
- Distribution of modernization model of medical education, among other countries of Eastern Neighbouring Area.

Lessons Planfor teachers for 2014 annexed PDF:
The department of internal medicine № 2 of Ivano -Frankivsk National Medical University in the framework of the «MUMEENA» on 15.11.2013r . the lesson as " business game " was conducted , where the students acted as "doctors ." Subject of the lesson - "Pain in the chest ."
The survey of students showed that this method is liked by 100 % of respondents, 98% of respondents believe that this type of studies should be conducted twice a month, and 94% - every week.
With this method, the students will develop clinical thinking and their practical skills will certainly be used in subsequent careers. We, in turn, believe that sharing experiences with our foreign colleagues , will promote national medical education.
Within the frameworks of the project MUMEENA of the program Tempus on the 19th April 2014 at the department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine under the guidance of Associate Professor N.I. Romash there was conducted a practical class for the 3rd-year students, Group 5 aimed at forming the bases of clinical thinking. The class was dedicated to the examining CBCR case “50 years old man with acute chest pain”. One of the students was performing the role of a peer-teacher; she conducted the practical class on her own. Under her supervision the students held questionnaires, examination, percussion, and palpation of the patient’s chest, auscultation, they also performed the analysis of the laboratory and instrumental indices, analyzed his ECG and coronarography results. Each student had a folder with the hand-out material. Solving of situational tasks was conducted by the students’ assessing of each other. The class was extremely dynamic with the high activity of students, who demonstrated good level of knowledge and strong motivation. At the class there were present the Head of the Department Doctor of Med. Sci. Prof. V.Ye. Neiko and Assoc. Prof. I.V. Tymkiv.
